Gnocchi Festival

28/02/2010 - 29/12/2010

Place of event: Casa da Praça restaurant – Aureliano Lima square

On the 29th of each month, the Casa da Praça Restaurant, located in the main square of Morro de São Paulo village, will host the "Gnocchi Festival". (In February it will happen on the 28th). It is followed mainly in Argentina, Uruguay and United States, and according to the tradition, eating gnocchi every 29th brings financial luck! Some people like to put a bill (of any value) under the plate, while eating.

The origin of this tradition is still unknown. In Brazil it was started in 1989 at the Quattrino Restaurant in São Paulo, through the owner Mary Nigri. She first heard about it from a friend, whose son-in-law is Italian-American. When Mary travelled to Italy she looked for people who knew about the gnocchi tradition and was not successful. Only in Sorrento did she hear a legend of an elderly couple who gave gnocchi to a homeless man on the 29th, and after that, everyone came into a great amount of money.

The Gnocchi is an Italian dish made with potatoes. At Casa da Praça it is served with different sauces each edition of the festival, among them: four cheese, bolognese and pesto sauces. The Gnocchi Festival starts at 7:30 pm and ends at 10 pm, every 29th.
