Morro de Sao Paulo Shopping Guide
If you're going to spend some time in Morro de São Paulo don’t worry if you forget your personal items such as toiletries and sunscreen. Morro has markets and pharmacies and the prices are relatively the same as other places. Unless you use products that are difficult to find.
The trade in general, such as supermarkets, banks, shops, pharmacies, internet cafes, travel agencies, Morro de São Paulo restaurants and bars are located on the village main street, called “Caminho da Praia”. This street also serves as access to the church and the trail leading to the lighthouse.
Trough Brazil it is easy to see art and culture represented in several handicraft fairs. The fairs encourage local crafts and show what is most creative in each community. Morro de São Paulo also exposes their art through the Arts and Crafts Fair. It is the perfect place to get an authentic souvenir of the island, besides being an important form of local livelihoods, as all the artisans who work at the fair, live in Morro and the only source of income for them is trading their products.
Handicraft Market
Founded and maintained for over 12 years by the Association of Artists and Artisans Residents of Morro de São Paulo (Amosp), the Handicraft Market is more than a simple attraction on the island. It is the opportunity for tourists to know the Morro de Sao Paulo art and culture. The adress could not be different: Praça Aureliano Lima, on the village. The stalls scattered around the plaza attract visitors by the colors of the displayed products. They are decorative objects, pieces of clothing, jewelry and other items.
The crafts fair is held every day and runs in the late afternoon, starting at 17h and ends around midnight. The show has a charm more for being surrounded by restaurants and pousadas that are located at the Maind Square. A great way to start the night in Morro de Sao Paulo is with a stroll through the market, dinner at one of restaurants in town and maybe extend the lineup at Foom’s tent, an Argentinian who sells pastries in the main square and animates the village nightlife with his drumming.
Arts, Crafts and Culture
Tourists who stroll around the Morro de São Paulo Handicraft will find items from local crafts and from other cities as well. There are about 20 exhibitors that gather decorative items such as paint and lamps, pieces of men’s, woman’s and kid’s clothing, and jewelry pieces in silver, women's accessories like bags and hats and even a few of island souvenirs made with recycled materials or craft made with raw materials such as coconut and palm fiber. There are some objects that attract the tourists attentions especially as the boats of the "Seu Pirata” (miniature boats made of wood) and Ângela Toledo artist's poetic card. Moreover, some of these poems are also on the Morro de São Paulo walls and streests.
